There’s much more to your time at Kirklees College than study. The social side of college life can build new friendships, spark new hobbies and leave you with some precious memories. With so many ways to get involved, you might find yourself struggling to fit it all in.

Students’ Union

It’s all about YOU!

Here at KC>>SU we put our students at the heart of what we do. It’s your voice we listen to, it’s your choices we act on…so turn up the volume and help us make the changes you care about!

Get social!

You can get involved in societies, clubs, events and trips; meet new friends; and relax and catch up in the college’s dedicated social areas.

Once enrolled in our SU at college, you can become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) and benefit from discounts at cinemas, restaurants and shops - your socialising doesn’t have to stop at college! www.nus.org.uk

Get involved

You could become a course representative to voice your opinions and make sure your classmates’ views are heard. As a course representative you would play a key part in decision making at college and you can add an additional skill to your CV.

If you would like to become even more involved, then why not stand for election on the Students’ Union executive team, become an ambassador, join one of our committees or help out as a Students’ Union volunteer?

If you are not at a school in Kirklees, or your school does not have access to UCAS Progress, you will need to complete an application form. You can complete this online, get spare copies in schools and libraries or download one from our website at www.kirkleescollege.ac.uk

Note: please make sure you check the individual entry requirements for each course before applying. If you are at school and don’t yet have your results, you will need an understanding of what you are likely to achieve.

Application deadline

For courses starting in September 2014, the deadline for full time applications is Thursday 9 April 2015.

If we receive your application after this date we cannot guarantee you an interview with a member of academic staff. Leaving your application to the last minute may result in courses already being full.

Tick ‘Dewsbury’ if you are applying for a course at the Dewsbury Centre (including the Construction Academy) or the Batley School of Art.

Tick ‘Huddersfield’ if you are applying for a course at any of these centres:

If you are still in education then you need to hand the form back to school.

What happens next?

Once we have your application we will send you an acknowledgement. We don’t usually start interviewing until January, although popular courses may interview before then.

All applicants are invited to attend an interview which usually takes place at college. Interviews can either be individual or part of group activities. For some courses you may be asked to complete some tasks, for example online testing, a short piece of writing, an audition or spend the day in the course environment. Your interview letter will explain to you what your interview involves.

We understand that sometimes it can be difficult to attend your interview especially around exam time, please contact us and we will try to rearrange it where possible.

Student story

Student story

Studying at Kirklees College gave Gemma Murphy the chance to follow her dream career, opening doors she never thought would be possible.

Gemma, from Ainley Top, Huddersfield, was working as a veterinary receptionist having gained her Level 3 BTEC Diploma qualification in 2007 at Kirklees College.

Then she heard about the degree-level HND Animal Management course and knew it would be a way that she could study to become a veterinary nurse so she decided to come back to college.

But with the range of experiences gained on the course and having secured the work placement opportunity of a lifetime – working with the education team at Blackpool Zoo - she realised she wanted to look at teaching people about animals rather than caring for them.

“It helped me to focus on what I really want to do. I came to college with one idea but then totally changed my mind,” said Gemma.

“Kirklees College has a really good reputation for animal courses and I have found it has helped open a lot of doors for me and given me the confidence to go for things I wouldn’t have done otherwise.”

Gemma secured a job with ZooLab – taking animals out to schools, nurseries, nursing homes and teaching people about conservation and looking after animals. Because of this she keeps a wide menagerie of animals at home, much to the delight of her two sons.

She is planning a trip to Gibraltar to work with and study birds of prey and to do conservation work with the National Trust having completed her degree in July 2014.
