Whether you're an absolute beginner or a whizz in the kitchen, it’s time to check out The Garden of England Cook School. Located just above the Romney Marsh in the grounds of Beautiful Lympne Castle, it is perfectly situated to take advantage of the abundance of produce in the Kent garden of England.

This friendly school was set up by Ruth Denzey, who also owns the The Bistro atLympne Castle.

Ruth is a qualified chef and teacher who has worked in the catering business for 25 years. She has regularly appeared with Dominic King on BBC Radio Kent.

She started the cook school 5 years ago and she has steadily built up a successful business with her full range of interesting courses, with something to suit all tastes and experience.

Course themes include Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Indian, Pasta and Italian, Vegetarian, Fish, Beginners and Classic French. Courses are followed by lunch of all the dishes prepared, and a glass of wine or beer.

Ruth, who specialises in patisserie, also offers a Cakes and Pastries course – an all-day course where you learn how to make a variety of delicious desserts.

Another popular offering is the She/He’s Leaving Home course for students about to head off to university. The course teaches them ‘store cupboard, budget cooking’ so they can cook up some quick, simple meals for themselves when they leave home for the first time.

Cooking has always been Ruth’s passion and she’s on a mission to spread the word to others.

"My aim with the school is simply to get people cooking,” she said. People can come to me to learn complicated cooking of course, and I enjoy that. But what I really want to do is to encourage as many people as possible to get their pots and pans out and cook from scratch.

“It doesn’t have to be about going to a supermarket and putting all your food for the week in a trolley,” added Ruth.

The school also runs popular Cook & Dine evenings where a small group of people get together to create a four-course meal. Cooks can participate as much as they feel comfortable with so it’s suitable for total novices too. The cooks also invite along a guest or too to share their efforts at the end of the evening.

“Many of the people on these Cook & Dine evenings are men who have never picked up a pot or pan before,” Ruth said. “Sometimes they have been bought the course as a present and they might be a little worried. But then they come along and they all love it and say it was far easier than they thought, and that they had fun too.”
